Radiation Dose Monitoring
Radiation dose monitoring is a method of checking radiation levels emitted by medical imaging platforms. Patients need to be protected from high radiation levels, as overexposure can lead to cancer and other high-risk diseases. The doses are measured in units of dose length product (DLP) and Volume Computed Tomography Dose Index (CTDIvol) for computed tomography (CT) devices.
Trends
Safety during scanning is a prime concern among patients. A safety belt around the pelvis of male patients can protect the testes from radiation, according to a report by Radiologic Technology. This was even proven when nearly 36% patients had increased radiation levels near the testes without the use of a safety belt.
Coriondus Vascular Robotics, a U.S. based company, recently collaborated on a agreement with Unfors RaySafe regarding their dose monitoring system. Coriondus’ system “CorPath” comes with a radiation-protected shield which can reduce chances of exposure by 95%. This system is unique in such a way that it protects the physicians from radiation. It can monitor radiation levels according to badges assigned to workers to display these levels in real-time. This deal is primarily targeted at clinicians working at catherization laboratories (cath labs).
GE Healthcare, an American pharmaceutical, recently launched a radiation dose monitoring system “DoseWatch Explore” to track radiation levels in its own CT devices. It works in collaboration with Microsoft Azure to track and record patient data on the Cloud. It uses this system to track patient data and provide the optimal dose.
Market Overview
The radiation dose monitoring market is estimated to attain a size of nearly USD 4 billion by 2025, according to a report by Grand View Research, Inc. Use of medical imaging platforms like computed tomography (CT) to detect diseases among the geriatric populace is driving global market growth.
Radiography was the largest market application in 2015 due to its use in diagnosing cancer. Dosimeters were the largest product in 2015. It is used widely by healthcare professionals to monitor the doses of radiation. Asia Pacific has potential of high growth due to improved healthcare conditions regionally. Key market players comprise GE Healthcare, Sectra, and Bayer AG.
