Fixed and Mobile C-Arms - A Helping Hand to Physicians

The need for rapid diagnosis triggered by high prevalence of chronic diseases has increased the development of fixed and mobile C-arms. C-arms find applications in neurosurgery, orthopedics, and cardiovascular disorders.

What are C-Arms?

C-arms are imaging devices that are used in diverse clinical applications. Mobile and fixed C-arms are the two major types of C-arm units. Mobile C-arms are commonly known as image intensifiers. They are more in demand than fixed units as they are inexpensive and versatile. Mini C-arms are used in podiatrics and sports medicine. Advancements in C-arms units include 3D visualization, reduced radiation doses, flat panel displays (FPD), image processing software, and higher resolution of real-time images.

Flat Panel Displays

Ziehm Imaging was one of the first to introduce a FPD system, followed by Philips. FPDs can enable a larger field of view and take up minimum space in the operating room. Their flat display was cleared by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for sale recently.

Mini C-arms

GE Healthcare recently launched OEC Elite MiniView C-arm. It can reduce errors in the operating room. Their latest imaging device is easy to maneuver during the procedures. It allows better control over radiation dosage and it also consumes less power.

Pain Management with C-arm

Sharp Medical Systems is one of the first to provide pain management services under the guidance of C-arm systems. Physicians can provide prolotherapy injections to patients with the help of real-time images.

Market Outlook

Mobile C-arms may register robust growth during the forecast period owing to its versatile customized solutions for different medical applications. Pain management is anticipated to be the biggest application segment in the forthcoming years. Asia Pacific may exhibit a high CAGR till 2025. Toshiba Medical Systems, GE Healthcare, Hologic Corporation, and Philips Healthcare are the prominent market players.
