Prevention of Chronic Diseases with Vitamin D Testing

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, principally obtained from sun exposure. It is available naturally  in some food and it can be consumed in the form of dietary supplements.
Vitamin D comes in two forms, namely, ergocalciferol (vitamin D2), which is present in some fish and plants and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), which is obtained from the sun. It is the predominant source of vitamin D for humans.

Significance of Vitamin D

This vitamin helps intestinal absorption of calcium, phosphate, zinc, magnesium, and many other nutrients. It is essential for overall health improvement and especially for the growth of strong and healthy bones. Vitamin D as also reduces inflammation and improves the neuromuscular and immune function.

Deficiency of vitamin D makes the bones thin and fragile. It can also case rickets in kids and osteomalacia in adults. Children below the age five, pregnant and breast-feeding women, people with very little exposure to sunlight, and persons with darker skin tones can be at a higher risk of vitamin D deficiency.

Advanced Flash Chemiluminescence (CLIA) Technology

Two types of tests are used to inspect the level of Vitamin D in the body, namely, 25-Hydroxy Vitamin D abbreviated as 25 (OH) D and 1, 25-Dihydroxy Vitamin D.
DiaSorin, an Italian multinational biotechnology company has developed ‘‘LIAISON’’ analyzer. The system uses chemiluminescent immunoassay (CLIA) technology to perform quantifiable determination of 25 (OH) D in human serum. The result of the test must be used in the combination with other clinical or laboratory examination.

The company’s another product; ‘LIAISON XL’ is a fully automated chemiluminescence analyser. It functions based on a “Flash” chemiluminescence (CLIA) technology with paramagnetic microparticle solid phase. It can perform complete sample processing along with measurement and evaluation of vitamin D levels.

Market Overview

According to Grand View Research, Inc.; the global vitamin D testing market is set to achieve nearly USD 1.1 billion by 2025. Increasing geriatric population and prevalence of celiac disease is projected to drive the market during the forecast period (2014 to 2025).
The 25 (OH) D test sector is anticipated to continue dominating the overall market during the forecast period. In 2016, North America led the market due to the presence of developed health care infrastructure and high awareness regarding routine screening and availability of the advanced products. Asia Pacific may emerge as the fastest growing region in the near future owing to improved healthcare infrastructure and expenditure in India, China, and Japan.

Prominent players operating in the worldwide market are Danaher Corporation, Abbott Laboratories, Siemens Corporation, bioMérieux SA, and F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd.
