Based on product type, surgical dressing is divided into primary, secondary and other dressings. Primary dressing is used directly on the wound to cover and protect it from any bacterial infection. Secondary dressing is used to cover the primary dressing and to keep it intact. In 2016, primary dressing emerged as the leading segment. Composite dressing is one of the most common types of primary dressing. It is multi-layered and water resistant. Rising cases of chronic diseases owing to poor lifestyle are likely to increase the possibility of surgeries and surgical dressings. Considering these possibilities, most manufacturing companies are investing huge money in R&D and technological improvements of surgical dressings.

For instance, a New Zealand based medical company named Chitogel along with a team of scientists from the University of Otago has developed a gel dressing for sinus surgery. According to the researchers, the dressing will be used to fill the wound caused by endoscopic sinus surgery. It can reduce the bleeding and eliminate the chances of scarring. Moreover, gel dressing against uncomfortable gauze bandages may reduce the post-surgical complications, which generally lead to another surgery. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of this gel dressing in hospitals and other medical centers.
