Cell Harvesting Systems – A Necessity to Treat Blood Disorders

Cell harvesting systemsCell harvesting systems are medical devices used in repairing damaged tissues or for transplantation purposes using stem cells. Stem cells are collected using three major methods – bone marrow, umbilical cord blood, and peripheral blood. The potency of these cells is tested by their ability to grow tissues or via clonogenic assays.

Stem cell research has attracted the interest of biopharmaceutical companies due to their latent potential in preventing cancer. This is evident by the investment of USD 1.49 billion by National Institutes of Health, a U.S. research agency in 2016. In addition, the rapid development in regenerative medicine and high demand for autologous stem cell transplantation for treating blood-related disorders has elicited interest in cell harvesting procedures.

Rapid Collection of Stem Cells

Major applications of cell harvesting systems include adipose tissue, bone marrow, peripheral blood, umbilical cord, and others.

The peripheral blood segment is anticipated to be the dominant application from 2017 to 2025 owing to high use of peripheral blood in stem cell transplants and stem cell research. Faster patient recovery and high safety levels associated with the procedure have led to patients adopting this method. According to a study by the American Society of Hematology in 2016, Terumo Corporation introduced a new system, Spectra Optia, for collecting stem cells via apheresis. The system was successful in collecting a higher amount of white blood cells using continuous mononuclear cell collection (CMNC) than its predecessor.

The adipose segment is expected to exhibit rapid growth from 2014 to 2025 due to their high usage in regenerative medicine. The advantage of easily harvesting adipose stem cells (ASCs) and its potential in stem cell therapies can propel segment growth. According to a report in the International Journal of Stem Cells in 2015, ASCs were successful in regenerating tissues in animal models.

Market Outlook

The global cell harvesting system market is expected to reach a market capitalization of USD 10.17 billion by 2025, according to a report by Grand View Research, Inc. High prevalence of blood cancer, blood-related disorders, and increasing health expenditure of nations are anticipated to augur market growth over the forecast period (2014-2025).

Rise in usage of methods such as autologous stem cell transplantation and stem cell banking are projected to propel market growth. High potential of stem cells in regenerative medicine is predicted to play a major role in the market. Establishment of certain standards for stem cell collection can influence market demand. Key market players include Terumo Corporation; PerkinElmer, Inc.; Bertin Technologies; and Avita Medical.
