Atherectomy Devices – A Boon For Peripheral Artery Disease Treatment

Atherectomy is a medical procedure used to clear the arteries of atherosclerotic plaque. These plaques are usually located in peripheral or coronary arteries. It has been used to treat peripheral artery disease (PAD), claudication, and critical limb ischemia (CLI).  This procedure is performed by cardiology interventionists.

Atherectomy Devices

Atherectomy devices are medical devices which assist in atherectomy. These devices are directional, orbital, laser, and rotational. They are used to treat small-vessel femoropopliteal or infrapopliteal disease. Some of these devices have proven their efficiency in trials. The success of such procedures has driven the demand of minimal invasive surgeries.

Latest Developments

Avinger Inc., a US-based company, obtained 501 (k) clearance from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to release the enhanced version of its atherectomy device, Pantheris in 2016. It employs optical coherence tomography (OCT) to guide interventionists in the surgery.

Medtronic recently launched two devices, SilverHawk and TurboHawk, to restore normal blood flow in the diseased arteries. These devices have seen success in the DEFINITIVE LE (determination of effectiveness of the SilverHawk peripheral plaque excision system for infrainguinal vessels/lower extremities treatment) trial. It had registered 78% and 95% success rate in claudicant and CLI patients respectively.

Market Overview

The worldwide atherectomy devices market is projected at USD 895 million by 2025, according to Grand View Research, Inc. It is expected to expand at a CAGR of 7% over the forecast period (2014 - 2025). Rising incidence of peripheral artery disease (PAD) is anticipated to spur global market growth in the forthcoming years.
Directional atherectomy devices dominated the market in 2016 due to its early market penetration. Laser atherectomy devices are anticipated to grow at a robust rate from 2017 to 2025. The high growth rate can be attributed to fewer complications associated with these devices.

North America led the global market in 2016 due to high numbers of FDA-approved devices and high cases of PAD regionally. Asia Pacific is expected to exhibit a significant growth rate from 2017 to 2025. Notable players include Terumo IS (Interventional Systems), Medtronic (Covidien), Boston Scientific Corporation, and Spectranetics.
