Bone Densitometers to Detect Bone Disorders Early On!

Bone Densitometers

Bone densitometers are devices used to assess bone mineral density (BMD) levels in bone tissue. It can be used to detect bone-related disorders such as osteopenia and osteoporosis. Peripheral and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) tests are recommended by healthcare providers to check such levels for their accuracy.

These devices have been successfully used to assess low calcium levels usually associated with hyperthyroidism in Indian patients. Postmenopausal women are highly susceptible to these disorders, according to the National Institutes of Health Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases.

Latest Developments

Technological advances have led to the integration of ultrasound and computer assistance which reduce the time required for these tests. GE Healthcare, one of the leaders in the medical device industry, introduced Lunar Expert, a device which has a better risk assessment rate. It can identify signs better with the aid of spatial resolution embedded in the device.

Mindways Software, Inc., a specialist in developing innovative medical technologies, has recently received approval from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for its improved Quantitative Computed Tomography (QCT). It can easily measure BMD levels in postmenopausal patients without the need of an additional CT scan.

Holologic Inc.’s latest development in bone densitometry has led to the introduction of the Delphi System. The device is integrated with Instant Vertebral Assessment (IVA) to obtain a high-resolution image of the lateral spine. It has decided to collaborate with Siemens Healthcare to distribute its product to gain market shares.

Market Outlook

The worldwide bone densitometers market size is projected at USD 1.2 billion by 2025, according to Grand View Research, Inc. It is anticipated to grow at a CAGR nearing 4% over the forecast period (2014 - 2025). It is majorly driven by the high incidence of osteoporosis affecting people globally.

Axial bone densitometry technology had dominated the global market in 2016. But peripheral bone densitometry is expected to gain good returns over the forecast period. Clinics segment is anticipated to be the biggest end-user in the forthcoming years. North America dominated the market in 2016, but Asia Pacific can exhibit a lucrative growth rate. Prominent players in the market are DMS Group; GE Healthcare; Hologic, Inc.; and BeamMed Ltd.
