Pharmaceutical Packaging to Avoid Biological Contamination of Drugs

Pharmaceutical packaging plays an important role of protecting drugs from biological contamination, physical damage, and risk of degradation. Generally, lightweight materials such as plastics and polymers, paper and paperboard, aluminium foil and glass are preferred for drug packaging.

 Types of Pharma Packaging

Depending upon their usage, pharmaceutical products are classified into primary, secondary, and tertiary products. Primary products include parenteral containers, caps and closures, plastic bottles, pouches and medication tubes, pre-fillable inhalers, and blister packs. Secondary products comprise accessories and prescription containers. On the other hand, shipping and handling related products like containers, barrels and edge protectors are the tertiary products.

Instant Sealing Solution

In Feb 2017, West Pharmaceutical Services, Inc.; introduced LyoSeal cap. It can provide an instant sealing solution especially for lyophilized-based drugs. This product is composed of plastic and is designed to diminish risks related to lyophilization process to meet the mandatory sealing requirements.

Freeze drying is often prone to glass breakage or vacuum loss in lyo chamber or during crimping due to vial closure or other such issues. However, the plastic design of this cap can provide an instant secondary vial closure in the lyochamber, thereby protecting and preserving the vacuum to make the capping process easier.
