How Point-of-Care Infectious Disease Diagnostics/Testing Can Lift Health Care Industry?

Growing adoption of companion diagnostics and personalized medicines due to virulence of infectious diseases is anticipated to impel demand for point-of-care infectious disease diagnostics/testing. Advanced self-testing and mobile devices can be send easily to places having lack of medical facilities. Timely diagnosis of infectious diseases and availability of proper treatment can save lives.

New Oral HIV Kit to Diagnose Within 40 Minutes

Based on diseases, the point-of-care (POC) infectious disease diagnostics/testing can be segmented as hepatitis B virus (HBV) POC, influenza/flu POC, tuberculosis (TB) & drug-resistant TB POC, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) POC, and. In 2016, HIV POC had accounted for highest revenue share owing to supportive initiatives from multiple entities such as world health organization (WHO) and centers for disease control and prevention (CDC). Such government organizations are leaving no space to spread health awareness among humans at global level. Rising health awareness coupled with growing need for timely diagnosis of infectious diseases is likely to impel demand for advanced testing devices.

Considering the demand, most manufacturing companies are focusing on self-testing devices.
For instance, new oral testing kits for HIV were distributed free of cost among local residents of Rwanda. The distribution was executed on world AIDS day during an event at amahoro national stadium, based in Kigali. The motive behind was not aware local people about the disease and test them for HIV status using the self-testing devices. It is quite convenient to use this testing kit using blood finger pricks and oral fluid. The device takes around 20 to 40 minutes to show test results. Such types of advanced testing devices are likely to alleviate the prevalence of infectious diseases.

Market Insights

Decreasing capacity of central labs due to growing need for healthcare is likely to foster demand for decentralized testing. High demand for portable devices and rapid testing is anticipated to augment market growth in coming years. Development of new products owing to rise in the investments for R&D is pegged to spur growth in this market during the forecast period (2017 to 2025).
Key players in the global market include BD & Company, Trinity Biotech, Alere, Siemens Healthineers, and Cardinal Health.
